ESL Creative Writing Prompt: Six Random Things (2)

When you are want to improve you English writing skills it is important to consistently practice writing in English. This ESL creative writing prompt is to give you an idea of something you can write about in English today. 

Today you will write a creative story. You can write about whatever you want…. BUT…. somewhere in your story you need to have the following six items: diamonds, a monkey, airplane, mirror, hot-dogs and a flute. 

You can choose to write your story about anything or you can base your story around these six things. You choose. Have fun!  












ESL Writing: Owls

In the picture above you see some owls in the snow. You will be doing several short writing activities about these owls. 

1. Describe the owls. What do they look like? What colors are they? Describe their bodies. 

2. Write a list about everything that you know about owls. 

-They have wings. 
-They sleep during the day. 

3. Write a list of questions you have about owls. 

Example Questions:
-How many years does the average owl live for?
-What do owls eat? 

4. Write a short story about what these owls do each day.

What does their daily life look like?
Where do they go?
What do they eat?
When/Where do they sleep?

ESL Writing Activity: Grocery Shopping and Food

1. Make a list of 20 different things that you typically buy when you go grocery shopping.

2. Write a sentence stating how often you eat or drink each item.

I eat chicken every day.
I drink tea every morning when I wake up.
I eat pizza about once a week.
I eat cake only on special occasions like birthdays.

3. Make a list of food items that you never buy and why.

I never buy fish because I don’t like to eat it.
I don’t buy sushi because it is expensive.
I never buy French fries because they are unhealthy.

ESL Writing Prompt: Wrestling an Alligator

Pretend you are on a walk through a swamp when you see an alligator coming at you. You don’t have time to run or hide. You need to wrestle the alligator and him who’s boss.

Write a creative story in English about wrestling an alligator.

Questions to help you write:
Who won?
How long did you wrestle him for?
Did you or the alligator get hurt?
Did you make it out of the swamp alive?
Did anyone show up and try to help you?
Was this your first time wrestling an alligator?

ESL Creative Writing: What Farm Animals Would Say


Imagine that you went to a farm and the animals could talk. What would they tell you about their life? 

Farm Animals: 

Be creative. What would the animals tell you about their everyday life? Do they enjoy living there? What is their favorite part about living on a farm? How long have they lived there? What don’t they like about living on a farm? What would they change about living on the farm? Etc.
